A.O. Scott is by far my favorite New York Times reviewer. In this Sunday's Arts section, he's written an appreciation of one of the all-time critical greats, Roger Ebert. It's a must-read.

Thank you SO much for providing this link. A great column about a great guy! It never mattered whether I agreed with Roger Ebert...his reviews have always been pure entertainment. That's what makes him so good at his job. While I will miss seeing him on television, I'm thrilled to know that he has battled back enough to start writing again. I'll take Roger Ebert in whatever medium I can get him. He - and you - are the only critics I read faithfully.

Like A.O. Scott, I think Ebert can be too favorable sometimes, especially in recent years. Still, his contributions to cinema cannot be overstated. His writings were so useful when I did my black-film thesis.
